The Microbiome & Probiotics
These are my notes and attempt to curate and organize my thoughts and research on the Microbiome. The microbiome is the term used to generally reference the collection of microbiota that lives in and on every human.
Dr. Perlmutter talks about it by conceptualizing a three foot cloud around us that makes up our real body ecosystem.
He relates this to the likeness of Pigpen from Charlie Brown. The Microbiome and probiotics have been a topic of my fascination for the last few years. :)
Over the last twenty years, the medical community has been learning that our overall health and immune system are actually tightly related to our ‘gut health’ or ‘gut flora’ as it is called.
In my humble opinion this is one of the most fascinating areas of modern medicine. Eric Schmidt, the former CEO & Chairman Google recently called it a ‘dizzyingly vast new frontier’ and referenced this article from the Economist: More evidence for a link between Caesarean sections and obesity.
If you simply want a recommendation for which probiotic you should take, the most I can tell you is what I do and swear by.
For the last couple of years I’ve been religious about taking various versions of probiotics from the brand Garden Of Life.
I would highly recommend choosing between one of the ones I’ve listed below. You can’t go wrong with either of them IMHO. It’s important to stay with taking them for a few months if you really want to see change, which also should include and will be affected by your daily diet.
Garden of Life’s Dr. Formulated Once Daily Ultra Probiotic
Garden of LIfe’s once daily ultra probiotics designed by Dr. Perlmutter, is a blend of probiotics must be kept COLD and in your refrigerator. This means that it is important to purchase in person from a responsible retailer that ensured the probiotics were never warmed in the shipping or storage process.
Do not buy it on Amazon as most suppliers won’t ship it cold and they didn’t ensure it was kept cold when they receive their shipment.
Be warned that I’ve tried their supposed shelf stable non-refrigerated option. After testing it, I do not believe that it works as well as the refrigerated version. The regular version can be and SHOULD BE BOUGHT COLD at Whole Foods or your local organic foods retailer.
I’ve created a playlist of some of my favorite interviews, lectures and videos regarding this subject. When you’re bored and have some time check out my Microbiome Playlist on YouTube.
BrainMaker by Dr. Perlmutter
BrainMaker: The Power of Gut microbes to Heal and Protect Your Brain for Life, is a phenomenal book on the subject by one of the doctors pioneering this field, Dr. Perlmutter
I credit BrainMaker and Dr. Perlmutter to both opening my eyes and getting me interested in learning more about the Microbiome and probiotics.
Dr. Perlmutter recently received an award from the American College of Nutrition for being "a visionary in the field and has made enormous strides in uncovering the connections between nutrition and brain health".
The Good Gut by Justin and Erica Sonnenburg
The Good Gut: Taking Control of Your Weight, Your Mood, and Your Long-term Health, is another wonderful book on this topic by a husband and wife team of researchers from Stanford.
