It Worked For Me By Colin Powell Audible Notes

In Life and Leadership

These are my notes on the audible version of It Worked For Me: In Life and Leadership by Colin Powell. This book is a very inspiring listen that I highly recommend for anyone looking to up their life game. Like most advice / self-help / leadership books out there, they only work if you take the learnings and put them into practice.

As a fan of Audible books that are actually read by the author, it was an added plus to listen to General Powell read this material while digesting it. Folks of high integrity, like General Powell, tend to also reflect their integrity in their voice when they speak.

Audible Book Notes

Chapter 1

General Colin Powell’s 13 Rules

#1 - “It ain’t as bad as you think. It will look better in the morning.”

An infantry soldier can do anything.

Don’t let the bastards get you down. Things we will get better, we will make them get better.

You are the leader and the troops will reflect your emotions.

#2 - “Get mad then get over it.”

Staying mad isn’t useful.

#3 - “Avoid having your ego so close to your position, that when your position falls, your ego goes with it.”

#4 - “It can be done.”

It is more about attitude than reality.

Maybe it can’t be done, but always start out believing it can be done.

Be an optimist, but don’t be stupid.

#5 - “Be careful what you choose. You may get it.”

Don’t rush into things or decisions.

Think through the consequences.

#6 - “Don’t let adverse facts stand in the way of a good decision.”

#7 - “You can’t make someone else’s choices. You shouldn’t let someone else make yours.”
